Tropical deforestation is one of the main causes of climate change. It is responsible for an increase in greenhouse gases that is greater than that of all cars, planes, trains and ships in the world combined.
The Amazon forest has been evolving continuously for 60 to 70 million years. It contains more than half of the animal species of the planet; distributes rain throughout North and South America and regulates the world’s temperature.
Indigenous peoples and traditional communities are critical to halt and reverse deforestation and protect biodiversity. Historically and today, they are threatened by a range of environmental crimes and violation of human rights. Supporting these leaders, communities and the institutions that represent them is an essential part of protecting the Amazon
