The Amazon forest has been evolving continuously for 60 to 70 million years. It contains more than half of the animal species of the planet; distributes rain throughout North and South America and regulates the world’s temperature. Indigenous peoples and traditional communities are critical to halt and reverse deforestation and protect biodiversity. Historically and today, they are threatened by a range of environmental crimes and violation of human rights.
