Tropical deforestation is one of the main causes of climate change. It is responsible for an increase in greenhouse gases that is greater than that of all cars, planes, trains and ships in the world combined.
The Amazon forest has been evolving continuously for 60 to 70 million years. It contains more than half of the animal species of the planet; distributes rain throughout North and South America and regulates the world’s temperature. Indigenous peoples and traditional communities are critical to halt and reverse deforestation and protect biodiversity. Historically and today, they are threatened by a range of environmental crimes and violation of human rights. Supporting these leaders, communities and the institutions that represent them is an essential part of protecting the Amazon

Patty Gillis, Laudato Si’ animator for Holy Cross Province, shares how she has become more trinitarian and contemplative in learning how to love as God loves and see the world as God sees it. “Ecological conversion is just another step in the religious conversion we all experience when we fall in love with God.” All parts of Mother Earth deserve protection, including rivers, water ecosystems, and all who depend upon them for their lives and livelihoods.
You can help protect rivers by advocating for the adoption of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Rivers in your country’s laws and ensuring its adoption results in the vital protections it guarantees. During this Season of Creation, given the alarming degradation of rivers globally and the resulting harm to the climate, wildlife, public health, and local economies, we encourage you to sign the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Rivers. Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, a day dedicated to the connection between Mary’s sorrows and the Passion of Jesus, her son.
During this Season of Creation, we encourage you to talk to someone about your feelings and concerns for Mother Earth, our common home. |
