St. Mary’s Parish was founded by the Passionsts in 1943 as a mission of Holy Family Church. A year later, a small frame church was dedicated on March 21 in Fairfield. A school was dedicated the following year, and three Sistsers of St. Francis of Joliet, IL, began teaching classes in September 1945. The classes were held outside and in the church. By 1948, the number of students had grown to 178; the church membership had grown to 45 parishioners by 1947.

St. Charles Lwanga, a young Ugandan Christian in the 1880s, stood firm in his faith despite persecution. As a leader among the king’s royal court, he encouraged and protected other young Christians during a time of intense trials. Alongside his companions, he faced martyrdom rather than renounce his beliefs. Canonized in 1964, St. Charles Lwanga is celebrated as a powerful symbol of courage and faith, especially among African youth.
